FAQ’s

Q: What does an executor do?

A: An executor is responsible for various financial tasks, such as probating the Will, identifying assets and liabilities, paying debts, filing taxes, and distributing assets to beneficiaries. Executors also handle non-financial duties, such as funeral arrangements, pet care, redirecting mail, and taking care of social media accounts.

Q: Can I get paid for being an executor?

A: Yes, executors can be paid for their time, effort, and responsibilities. In British Columbia, the maximum initial fee allowed is 5% of the estate’s value, along with an annual care and management fee of up to 0.4% if long-term administration is needed.

Q: What happens if there is no Will?

A: If someone dies without a valid Will, they are considered “intestate.” In such instances, the government has a formula for estate administration and distribution under the Wills, Estate, and Succession Act. There is a prioritized list of individuals who can apply to become the estate’s administrator, with priority given to spouses and adult children or their nominees.
